The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has assured the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of further support and renewed partnership in its efforts to combat substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.

During a courtesy visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, the new Country Representative of UNODC in Nigeria, Mr. Cheikh Ousmane Toure, commended the agency’s leadership role in drug law enforcement in Africa, particularly in the West African sub-region.

He emphasized the need to re-engage and re-energize the relationship between UNODC and NDLEA to cascade successes recorded at the national level to the states.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), appreciated the UNODC’s support over the years and expressed confidence that the new Country Representative would take the existing relationship to a new height.

Marwa highlighted several areas where the agency requires support, including:

– Alternative Development Programme: Providing alternative means of livelihood for cannabis growers.
– Drug Use Survey: Conducting a fresh survey to reassess the prevalence of drug use and identify new trends.
– National Drug Control Master Plan: Developing a new master plan to replace the current one, which expires in 2025.
– Capacity Building and Training: Providing more master trainers to enhance the agency’s personnel capacity.
– Field Test Kits: Procuring handy field test kits to support the agency’s operations.

The UNODC’s pledge of support is a significant boost to the NDLEA’s efforts to combat substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.
