Team Nigeria has departed for the Lefika International Relays, aiming to secure qualification slots for the World Relay Championships.
The team, consisting of 15 athletes and three officials, will compete in four events: men’s 4x100m, men’s and women’s 4x400m, and the mixed 4x400m relay.
AFN Technical Director Gabriel Okon expressed confidence in the team’s ability to qualify, citing the blend of home-based and overseas athletes. “We need to build a strong blend of athletes at home and those abroad. Together, they can strengthen the team and deliver better results,” Okon said.
Athletes George Patience Okon and Victor Ime echoed Okon’s optimism, with Okon saying, “This race means a lot to me and the team. We are going there to give our best, and with that, we believe we will qualify for the World Championships later this year.”
The women’s 4x100m and mixed 4x100m relay teams have already secured qualification, leaving the remaining squads to battle for available slots.
The team includes experienced athletes such as Enaruna Anita Itohan, Badmus Gafari Atanda, and Ezeakor Chidera, alongside young talent like Jecinter Lawrence.
Okon thanked the National Sports Commission and AFN for their support, hoping for continued backing.
The Lefika Relays are a crucial step towards the World Relay Championships in May.
