Arsene Wenger has declared that Olivier Giroud is not down the pecking order at Arsenal, revealing the France international is not second choice to Alexis Sanchez regardless of the latter’s explosive form.
So far this season the Arsenal manager has played Chilean international, Sanchez upfront with the player scoring eight goals. This is in the absence of Giroud who has battled with a toe injury and recently returned to action against Sunderland.
Scoring a brace against Sunderland on October 29 as a substitute, Giroud has so far scored three goals in two matches, following his goal in the 3-2 win against Ludogorets in Tuesday’s Champions League tie on Novenmber 1.
Arsene Wenger has declared that regardless of the number of games the France striker has played this season, Giroud is not a plan B.
“There is no plan B in any squad, I never thought about my players like that,” Wenger said in his press conference ahead of Sunday’s north London derby at home to Tottenham.
“The team who is the most effective for the next game, that’s what you pick and I consider everyone as a regular player. That is basically what a manager thinks, what is [best] for the next game.
“If he is involved in the next game in your mind, he plays. If not then he doesn’t start. He has shown he is a huge asset for the club and I have always supported him.”
