Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens lost 2-1 to champions Mamelodi Sundowns in their Group B opening game at the 2022 CAF women’s Champions League in Morocco on Monday.
Lelona Daweti bagged the first brace of this year’s edition as her goals in each half put Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 up. She scored in 32nd minutes with the second goal in the 57 minute.
Mary Anjor pulled a goal back for The Prosperity Girls late in the game which was only a consolation n the 80th minutes.
Bayelsa Queens will hope to bounce back from the defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns when they engage DR Congo’s TP Mazembe who defeated Wadi Degla of Egypt one nil in the second game in the group on Thursday.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies coach, Jerry Tshabalala said they were able to win because they have studied Bayelsa Queens style of play and that their game plan worked for them.
Technical Adviser of Bayelsa Queens FC, Domo Okara said it is not over yet and that if they had taken their chances the score line would have been different and promised to bounce back in the team’s next game on Thursday against TP Mezambe Ladies.
The maiden edition of the CAF women’s Champions League in Egypt last year was won by Mamelodi Sundowns when they beat Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies 2-0 in the final.
