The National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS) has commended the leadership role of the National Sports Commission (NSC) following the election of former Nigerian athlete, Fatima Yusuf-Olukoju, as NAWIS representative into the board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
After the election, the Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, held a reconciliatory meeting with NAWIS and the principal contestants, Fatima Yusuf-Olukoju and veteran sports journalist Nneka Anibeze, to iron out any grey areas arising from the outcome of the elections.
The meeting resulted in both contestants deciding to forge a common front and work together for the overall interest of the Girl Child and Women empowerment in Nigerian Sports. Fatima Yusuf-Olukoju, who won the election, expressed her delight with the NSC’s leadership and praised the DG’s ability to bring people together.
Yusuf-Olukoju stated, “We are all family, and as family, people do fight, but the goal is to amend and move on because we all have one common goal, which is to see that the AFN succeeds.”
Nneka Anibeze also praised the DG’s role in brokering peace and agreed to work with Yusuf-Olukoju towards a common goal.
Both women share a passion for athletics and women’s empowerment, and they have agreed to team up and move the federation forward. The NSC’s leadership has been commended for its efforts in promoting unity and progress in Nigerian sports.
