The Nigerian weightlifting team participating in the 2025 Africa Weightlifting Championship in Mauritius has received a significant financial boost from the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade.

Olopade, who is currently in Mauritius to boost the team’s morale, donated $3,800 to the athletes and officials of the team. This gesture is expected to motivate the team to perform at their best in the championship.

The DG announced that medal winners would receive additional financial rewards, with the slogan “more Gold, more money” emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to supporting its athletes. Olopade also conveyed greetings from the Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, who emphasized Nigeria’s competitive edge in weightlifting.

Furthermore, Olopade announced that four Nigerian weightlifters had been shortlisted into the A Category of the Elite Programme, which comes with an annual training grant of $20,000 each. The athletes would also receive an installment of $5,000 each as part of their training grants.

The NSC DG emphasized that athlete welfare is a top priority for the Commission, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This financial support is expected to enable the athletes to focus on their preparations for upcoming competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, World Championship, and Olympic Games.
