A “Night of Tributes” will be held in honor of the late Christian Chukwu, a legendary figure in Nigerian football, on July 28, 2025, at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos.
The event, spearheaded by Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, will feature songs and tributes from friends and fans who cannot attend Chukwu’s funeral in Enugu State on August 16, 2025.
Chukwu, a former captain and coach of the Nigerian national team, passed away recently, along with Charles Bassey, another member of the 1980 African Cup of Nations-winning squad. Their names are immortalized on the Wall of Fame at the NIIA, a monument dedicated to Nigeria’s sports heroes.
The families of both Chukwu and Bassey are organizing their funerals, with Special Organising committees set up to handle the arrangements. Those who wish to support the families or participate in the events can reach out to the designated contact persons for more information.
The “Night of Tributes” event promises to be a meaningful celebration of Chukwu’s legacy, with individuals and groups invited to participate in any way they can.
