The Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) has announced a major overhaul of its awards system, introducing two new badges that are set to shake up the continent’s Scrabble scene.

The 2025 Player Awards feature the Elite Veteran (EV) badge, reserved for top-performing veterans, and the Junior Continental Champion (JCC) badge, honoring outstanding young players.

“The introduction of these new badges reflects PANASA’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellence in Scrabble,” said Maxwell Kumoye, Spokesperson for the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF).

“We are excited to see the impact this will have on the Scrabble community and look forward to announcing further details in the coming days.”

The EV badge is exclusive to players who have consistently ranked among the top 10 in the first seven Africa Scrabble Championships, while the JCC badge is a backdated honour for U-15 and U-19 champions of the Africa Youth Scrabble Championship since 2023.

These new awards are expected to raise the stakes for Africa’s top word warriors and bring a fresh dynamic to the continent’s Scrabble hierarchy.
