John Mikel Obi will continue as captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria according to the new Technical Adviser of the national team, Gernot Rohr.
Rohr was appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) last month as the Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles on a two-year-contract.
In spite of the new Technical Adviser, Mikel who took over as Super Eagles captain from Ahmed Musa in March 2016 will continue his role under the new boss.
Rohr describes Mikel as a natural leader, hailing the midfielder for his role in the Dream Team VI that won a bronze medal at the recently concluded Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
“Mikel is a natural leader,” Rohr told the media ahead of his first game as Super Eagles Technical Advsier.
“His experience and leadership is exceptional. I saw him play at the Olympics and I’m sure I want him to continue as my captain.
“He spoke with me on the phone and he is here again when he should be resting from the rigours of the Olympics.”
The new Technical Adviser will manage his first game as Super Eagles boss on Saturday, 3 September in a dead rubber game of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tanzania.
