The Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Debo Oshundun, has described the series of recognition awards given by the illegal caretaker Committee set up by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Incorporated (SWANI), as an act of desperation by the illegal caretaker Committee.

In a statement signed by Bunmi Ogunyale, Lagos SWAN Secretary, Oshundun, stressed that, the action of the illegal caretaker Committee giving out three quick Recognition Awards to prominent Lagosians without due process, showed clearly that, they are just out to get immediate gains and gifts from the awardees without the approval from the Lagos SWAN executive elected by the Congress of the authentic Lagos SWAN members.

“It is out of place for the illegal SWANI Caretaker Committee to venture into giving three quick Recognition Awards to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Biodun Alabi, the Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Hon. Moshood Oshun and lately the Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

Oshundun said:”The illegal SWANI Caretaker Committee had showed to everyone that, their actions were purely survival tactics and the only way they possibly needed to sustain their illegality despite the ruling of law court, that, we should return to status quo.

“Their other survival method was the collection of money as bookings for the usage of hall at the Lagos SWAN Secretariat from unsuspecting members of the public who were not aware of the existence of the illegal Caretaker Committee.

“We have resolved to write letters to the three unsuspecting Lagosians who were given awards by the illegal body to officially reject the awards, as the awards never passed through due process.

“The SWANI Caretaker Committee should be confident enough to flag off their new association instead of using the deceptive method to confuse members of the public to believe they are still the original National SWAN of which Lagos SWAN is a state chapter.”

The Lagos SWAN chairman added that, the leadership of SWANI openly renounced their membership of the NUJ in a published statement, which confirmed their official pull-out from the national body of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria.

Oshundun assured members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, to remain steadfast and resolute as we await the court decision on the activities of the illegal body.
