Nigeria’s table tennis teenage sensations, Abayomi Animasahun and Michael Obayomi showed what potentials they have to become future stars of the sport, at the ongoing ITTF World Junior Circuit tagged Egypt Junior and Cadet Open.
The duo put up a marvellous performance to defeat Egypt and Tunisia 3-1 to qualify for the semi-final of the cadet boys’ team event. It was Obayomi who started the rout with 11-6, 11-9, 12-10 win over Egypt’s Marwan Nader but Animasahun could not increase the tally after he fell to Tunisia’s Youssef Ben Attia 7-11, 15-13, 10-12, 11-9, 11-8 to put the match at 1-1.
In the doubles’ match, Obayomi and Animasahun combined very well to restore Nigeria’s lead with 4-11, 8-11, 7-11 win over the duo of Egypt’s Nader and Tunisia’s Ben Attia. Animashaun got back is rhythm against Egypt’s Nader when he defeated the Egyptian 11-0, 12-10, 9-11, 8-11, 5-11 to strengthen Nigeria’s victory, with an overall 3-1 win over the North Africans.
In the first semi-final tie, the Nigerian duo will battle for a place in the final against Egypt Team A. While in the junior boys match, Nigeria will battle Egypt Team A for a place in the final with the girls’ team confronting Egypt Team A in the semi-final.
