Nigeria’s fencing hopes will rest on 18-year-old sensation Inkosi Brou as he leads the national team to the 2026 African Senior Fencing Championships in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, set for May 31 to June 6.

This will be Brou’s second appearance at the continental showpiece. The Nigerian-American is currently the country’s top-ranked fencer and earlier this year became the first Nigerian to crack the global Top 10 in the Men’s Sabre Junior rankings.

Born and raised in the U.S., Brou has represented Nigeria since October 2023. He is the grandson of the late Prof. Dora Akunyili, former NAFDAC Director-General. In 2024, he made history again by winning silver at the World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Iceland — Nigeria’s first-ever international fencing medal.

Brou will be joined in the men’s sabre by Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye, 21, and Phoenix Zaoku-Sabre. Akinyosoye was Nigeria’s top performer at the 2025 edition in Lagos, advancing to the individual quarterfinals. The UK-based fencer previously competed for England at cadet and junior levels before switching allegiance to Nigeria.

National coach Ibrahim Alogba backed the team’s chances and sees Abidjan as key preparation for the 2026 Commonwealth Championships. “I am confident in the team,” Alogba said. “Hopefully, we can have more local-based athletes joining their foreign-based counterparts.”

Brou continues to compete regularly on the FIE World Cup circuit as he builds toward his main target: the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where he aims to become Nigeria’s first Olympic fencer.
