AFN Unveils 92-Member Team For 3rd CAA U-18/U-20 Championships

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced its official team for the 3rd CAA U-18/U-20 Championships, scheduled to take place at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from July 16 to 20, 2025.

The team comprises 92 athletes, with 51 males and 41 females, who will compete in various track and field events.

The team is divided into two categories: U-18 and U-20. In the U-18 category, 23 boys and 17 girls will compete in 17 events each. In the U-20 category, 29 boys will participate in 19 events, while 23 girls will compete in 18 events ยน.

AFN Technical Director, Gabriel Okon, expressed confidence in the team’s potential, stating, “We have assembled the future of Nigeria athletics for this Championship. They’re young, eager to learn, and the spirit in the camp is sky-high.” Okon highlighted the thorough selection process, which considered athletes’ strength, technical and tactical abilities, as well as events where Nigeria has an advantage.

AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, charged the team to go for glory, pride, and honor, emphasizing the importance of determination and zeal to succeed. “It’s not a win at all cost, but they should run, jump, and throw with the zeal and determination to succeed. We are fully committed to this project of laying a solid foundation,” Okowa stated.

He also noted that the team aims to surpass their previous performance in Ndola, Zambia, where they finished on the podium with 41 athletes.

Temitope Ademola and Honourable Victor Clement have been appointed as team captains, with Ademola leading the girls and Clement leading the boys.

The team has undergone rigorous training camps and performance assessments, with the goal of maintaining Nigeria’s dominance on the continental stage. The championship will feature athletes from over 40 countries, with South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Egypt expected to send strong teams.
