Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers has expressed his frustration over not being given the opportunity to play in official games for the Super Eagles, despite being part of the squad for five years.
“It hurts sometimes, I feel disappointing,” Dessers said. “I’ve been in and around the squad for 5 years now, and I haven’t played in an official game yet, only friendly games, so I may say that hurts.”
Dessers acknowledged the strong competition for places in the team, citing the presence of top strikers like Victor Osimhen. “There’s always a lot of different factors – of course, you have a few strikers, like for example Victor Osimhen who is a clear number one,” he said. “It depends on form, on choices, on personal opinion.”
Dessers expressed his disappointment over missing out on two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, feeling that he was in good form and deserved a place in the squad. “The 2 AFCON I missed out really hurts because I felt that at that time I was on my form and I had a place in the squad,” he said.
Despite the setbacks, Dessers remains determined to prove himself and earn a spot in the team.
“The only thing I can do is to perform and score my goals in my club and show that I’m ready,” he said. “When I get the call-up, I can show what I can do for the team, how I can help the team with goals and also with hard work and dedication.”
