The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is taking proactive steps to ensure Team Nigeria qualifies for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, scheduled for September 13-21.
With leading athletes like World 100m hurdles champion and record holder Tobi Amusan and reigning 100m men’s champion Sunday Israel Okon expressing optimism about qualifying for the relay events, the AFN is seeking financial support.
The federation says it’s objective is to inspire athletes to achieve podium finishes in Tokyo, enhancing Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.
The rescheduled CAA Region II Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana (August 19-20) is crucial for securing spots in the World Championships.

President Chief Tonobok Okowa emphasises securing necessary funding for top athletes to participate in the championships in Ghana. Okowa thanks the National Sports Commission and sponsors for their support and calls for further assistance to enhance athlete preparation.
Nigeria’s relay teams (men’s 4x100m, men’s 4x400m, women’s 4x100m, women’s 4x400m, and mixed 4x400m) are currently outside the automatic qualifying range for the World Championships. The teams missed qualification at the national trials in Lagos, with times far behind the required thresholds.
The AFN remains committed to developing athletics in Nigeria, confident that with the right support, Team Nigeria can excel on the world stage.
