The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has issued a statement regarding the two-year ban imposed on Imaobong Nse Uko by the Integrity Unit of World Athletics for doping violations.
According to the AFN, the ban is a result of Uko’s failure to comply with whereabouts filing requirements, a responsibility that lies with individual athletes.
AFN explained that athletes are required to provide their whereabouts information on a quarterly basis, including their home address, email address, phone number, and regular activities such as training and work locations. This information is necessary to facilitate unannounced doping tests.
The AFN distanced itself from the ban, stating that it is not responsible for conducting whereabouts tests. Instead, it is the International Federations and National Anti-Doping Organizations that determine whether an athlete is required to provide whereabouts information. The AFN emphasized that it will continue to carry out its drug advocacy campaign to educate athletes, coaches, and technical officials about anti-doping regulations.
The AFN highlighted its ongoing efforts to promote clean sport and prevent doping. The Federation has been organizing anti-doping seminars, including one during the recent National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The AFN also emphasized the importance of athlete discipline and will continue to spread anti-doping principles to athletes.
The AFN appealed to athletes to take responsibility for their whereabouts filing and to join the Federation’s campaign for clean sport.
The Federation also called on the media to help disseminate its drug awareness advocacy programs and campaigns, which will help promote clean sport and protect the integrity of athletics.
