Ahead of the 2023 African Senior Wrestling championships in Tunisia, Wrestlers representing Nigeria at the events have expressed hopes of a good performance, following the acquisition of the services of United World Wrestling trainer Angel Pineda from Cuba.
The Wrestlers gave the assurance in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital where they are camping in preparation for the African events in May 15th to 21th.
Solomon Olabo who would be making his debut at the events ascertained that he is in great shape to give a good account of himself at the African championships coming up in Tunisia.
According to him training with United World Wrestling trainer Angel Pineda has improved his Wrestling and hope to take advantage of his teachings.
“I qualified for the first time for the African events and I’m very happy about it. That’s why I’m preparing so hard to make Nigeria proud, my coaches and everyone that has supported me.”
“I really want to appreciate the president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Daniel Igali for his unending support and also for bringing a trainer from Cuba to improve our game, God bless him.”
Another debutant Ikechukwu Robinson expressed optimism of giving his best as he now has a better understanding of Wrestling prior to the arrival of Angel Pineda from Cuba.
“Well by the special grace of God we are good to go, we are set to represent Nigeria and get medals by God’s grace.”
“As for Mr Angel Pineda he’s marvelously good, at least I have grabbed a lot from him, for instance I used to wrestle while bending but now he has made me to know Gre-Roman is all about head up and forward so I think there is much difference to my game.”
Meanwhile, United World Wrestling trainer Angel Pineda appreciates the president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Dr Daniel Igali for the hospitality he has felt since arriving Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital.
“I’m in Bayelsa due to the invitation of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation through United World Wrestling to prepare the team for the forthcoming African championships and future events.”
“I’m glad to be in Bayelsa, the people here have been receptive especially the president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Dr Daniel Igali, and the athletes they have been warm-hearted towards me, Bayelsa is now my home.”
