…As Team Nigeria Eyes WESPAC Glory

A wave of corporate backing is bolstering the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) as the nation prepares for the 2025 World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) in Accra.

The newly inaugurated NSF board has attracted support from several high‑profile sponsors, signaling growing confidence in the country’s scrabble ambitions.

According to a statement signed by Maxwell Kumoye Spokesperson, Nigeria Scrabble Federation, leading the charge is Loenese International, whose Managing Director, Engineer Gbenga Ojofeitimi, is a longtime scrabble enthusiast. With over 20 years of patronage, Ojofeitimi’s company has pledged financial backing for Team Nigeria’s quest for glory in Ghana. “He loves to see people grow,” said a source close to the federation, noting his contributions to local and international tournaments and to the welfare of players.

Another prominent ally is Sir Itiakpo Ikpokpo, CEO of Dunamis and a familiar figure in sports sponsorship. Fresh from the success of the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo, Ikpokpo has thrown his weight behind the “word warriors” of Nigeria.

Perculiar Nigeria Limited, a major construction firm led by Engineer Olanrewaju Adeleke, has also joined the crusade. The company, which backed last year’s All Nigeria Amazon Scrabble Championship in Benin City, has promised further support for the NSF board’s programmes and intends to bring additional business contacts into the fold.

Boaz Commodities Ltd, headed by Collins Okafor of the celebrated BSP Tournament in Ajegunle, Lagos, has signaled interest in financing NSF events, a move expected to strengthen both grassroots and elite scrabble development.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has been equally supportive. Under Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director‑General Hon. Bukola Olopade, the NSC has been “burning candles at both ends” to ensure scrabble thrives as a national sport, providing what officials describe as “massive and game‑changing” backing for the Accra campaign.

Inside the national team camp, Engineer Dipo Akanbi, Chairman of the Lagos State Scrabble and Monopoly Association, has emerged as a quiet source of inspiration, offering funding, moral support and even a surprise lunch for players and coaches.

With such a lineup of sponsors and government backing, the mood among players is electric. The countdown to WESPAC has begun, and Team Nigeria is poised to make another bold statement on the world stage.
