Nigeria mourns the loss of Dr. Doyin Abiola, a pioneering journalist and the wife of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, who was the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Dr. Abiola passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, after an illness, at the age of 82.

Dr. Doyin Abiola was a trailblazer in Nigerian journalism. She was the first Nigerian woman to become an editor of a Nigerian daily newspaper and later served as the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the National Concord newspapers.

Her journalism career began in 1969 at the Daily Sketch, where she wrote a popular column called “Tiro,” addressing social and gender issues.

Dr. Abiola earned a degree in English and Drama from the University of Ibadan in 1969, a master’s degree in Journalism from the United States, and a PhD in Communications and Political Science from New York University in 1979.

She worked with Daily Times, became the pioneer daily editor of National Concord, and was promoted to Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief in 1986.
Dr. Abiola was a recipient of the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) Lifetime Achievement Award at the 24th DAME Ceremony and was granted an Eisenhower Fellowship in 1986.

Dr. Doyin Abiola’s legacy marks the end of an era for Nigerian journalism, with tributes pouring in to celebrate her contributions to the media industry.
