The 2025 WTT Contender Lagos got off to a thrilling start on Thursday, July 24, with a major upset that sent shockwaves through the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall at Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Japan’s top seed, Hina Hayata, was knocked out in straight sets by India’s defending champion, Sreeja Akula, who won 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-3).
Akula, seeded ninth, attributed her success to careful preparation and tactical discipline. “I was well-prepared for the match, even though it was my first time playing against her. I didn’t focus on rankings; I just concentrated on my game, and I’m happy with how I played,” she said.
Akula, who made history as the first Indian to win a WTT title in Lagos last year, expressed her confidence as the defending champion. “Being the defending champion gives me a lot of confidence. Lagos has been a good hunting ground for me, and I’m really happy to be back.”
Other notable performances on the opening day included Egypt’s former African champion, Dina Meshref, who advanced to the second round with a solid win. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Egyptian sensation Hana Goda came from behind to defeat India’s Roy Krittwika 3-1 (8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7), booking a spot in the round of 16 where she’ll face Chinese Taipei’s Yi-Tian Yeh.
Goda, the tournament’s third seed, was thrilled to return to Lagos, where she won her first African title in 2022. “I love being in Lagos. I have many friends here, and I always feel supported. I hope to put on a better show for the fans this time,” she said, reflecting on her comeback win.
As the tournament heats up, fans can catch the live action on WTT’s official platforms, YouTube, app, and website. The competition will continue until July 26, 2025, with top seeds vying for ranking points and the $100,000 prize pool.
