…Reject Imposed Leadership

The Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has vehemently rejected the imposed leadership of Olatutu Oladunni-led executive, calling for fresh elections to be held as soon as possible.

This decision is in line with the resolution of the 2024 SWAN full council meeting, which dissolved all executive bodies and ordered fresh elections in the Lagos SWAN Chapter.

In a strongly worded letter to the National SWAN Executive, the Lagos SWAN stakeholders commended the current leadership’s efforts to address the challenges inherited from the previous administration under Honor Sirawoo. However, they expressed concerns that the reconciliation process in Lagos has deviated from the precedent set in Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory.

The stakeholders argued that the imposed leadership is unconstitutional and lacks the support of the majority. They questioned why Lagos SWAN’s case was being handled differently, citing the legal principle of stare decisis, which emphasizes consistency in decision-making.

Lagos SWAN has insisted that the status quo be maintained pending the implementation of the decision from the apex decision-making body of SWAN. The members alleged that there are no clear plans for a credible election and reiterated that they would not participate in any electoral process unless the National SWAN takes full responsibility for organizing a fresh election.

While reaffirming their commitment to peace, the stakeholders stressed the importance of due process to prevent further leadership crises within the association.

The demand for fresh elections is seen as a crucial step towards restoring legitimacy and stability to the Lagos SWAN Chapter.
