The YETI Youth Empowerment Foundation recently held a virtual round talk aimed at fostering peace, healing, and rebuilding in Mushin, Lagos. The event, themed “Creating a Peaceful Atmosphere Among the Youth and Residents of Mushin Community: Build the Youth, Build the Nation,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss ways to address the root causes of violence and youth restiveness in the community.
Addressing Root Causes of Violence
Commissioner Nkechi Uzoegwu, Executive Director of YETI Global Foundation, emphasized the need for community leaders, elders, and government stakeholders to come together to empower young people and engage them positively. “There is too much violence, killings, and unrest in Mushin. We need to change the narrative,” she said.
Dr. Veronica Ufoegbune, a participant from California, USA, called for a multi-dimensional approach to youth empowerment, including identifying talents, providing digital literacy, and funneling creativity into nation-building. “This program will not only help youths in Mushin, but Nigeria as a whole,” she stated.
Hon. Ajala Rasaq Olushola, Chairman of Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye LCDA, identified social and economic inequality, unemployment, territorial fights, trauma, and stress as underlying causes of violence in Mushin. However, he noted that Mushin is not as bad as people paint it, citing the community’s contributions to Nigeria’s progress.
Shifting Perceptions about Youth
Youth advocate Miss Sola Asekun-Amusu emphasized the need to shift perceptions about youth, highlighting their energy, creativity, and brilliance. She urged stakeholders to create platforms that provide real job opportunities, encourage skill acquisition, and stop politicians from using youths as tools of violence.
Dr. Omobolanle Awero Adelakun stressed the importance of moral education and alternative learning paths, including vocational and technical training. Hon. Emmanuel Bamigboye, Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, applauded the initiative and emphasized mentorship, highlighting the potential of skill acquisition and guidance to transform lives.
The round talk concluded with a renewed call to action, urging stakeholders to work collaboratively to build sustainable peace and development in Mushin by recognizing the potential of its youth and addressing the root causes of violence.
