As the Chairperson of the Kogi State Table Tennis Association, Shaibu D. Mohammed is a man on a mission to transform table tennis in Nigeria. With his extensive experience and passion for the sport, he is confident that he can bring about positive change.
Shaibu’s background in accounting and diplomacy has served him well in his pursuit of excellence in table tennis. He holds a BSc in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and a master’s degree in Diplomacy and Strategic Studies, with an MBA from the University of Lagos.
Shaibu believes that the dominance of the south in Nigerian table tennis today can be attributed to the infrastructure and attention given to the sport by the region. However, he has started putting attention and infrastructure in place in the North-Central region, and the results are showing. His team has had success, including Joshua Samuel, who has qualified to represent Africa.
Shaibu’s plan to revive and strengthen grassroots table tennis development involves introducing table tennis as one of the sports during inter-house sports of schools. He also plans to introduce local government tournaments and build infrastructure to support the sport.
Shaibu recognizes the importance of coaches in developing talents in any sport. He plans to make provision for coaches and give them the responsibility to dig out talents and bring out the best in existing players.
Shaibu believes that partnership with the private sector and multi-nationals is key to attracting sponsorship and support for table tennis. He plans to offer them sponsorship deals and show them how table tennis can be a valuable platform for their corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Shaibu is committed to transparency, accountability, and fair representation in the management of table tennis in Nigeria. He plans to build a website where people can access information about the sport’s activities and finances.
