The 5th edition of the Emmanuel Egbele Annual Scrabble Tournament (EEAST) is set to take place this weekend at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, featuring some of the top scrabble stars in Nigeria.
The tournament, tagged ‘Quinta Essentia’, promises to be a thrilling two-day event with a prize money of over five million naira.
Several top scrabble players have confirmed their participation in the tournament, including Grand Master John Ayedun, who recently conquered the South-West region and boasts a top-finish at the delayed 2023 African Games side-event. Other notable players include ‘Word warrior’ Abdulmumeen Jimoh, who recently won the Bubbles International Scrabble Tournament (BIST) without dropping a single game, and Jack Mpaka, the WGPO Scrabble Word Cup Champion (B-Div).
Tega Okiemute, the Delta-state born scrabble player, has also thrown his hat into the ring, looking to use his signature rapid-fire move for bingos on the board to outmaneuver his opponents. Ben Quickpen, known for his deadly wordplay, will also be looking to challenge the field with his master stroke capable of turning a losing position into a pleasant surprise.
Other notable players who have confirmed their participation include Samuel Adebola, champion of the inaugural BSP Scrabble tournament, and David Ojih, the current African Youth Champion. Christopher Monday, winner of the Lite category, will also be defending his title in the Challenger Division.
The championship is expected to be viewed and followed by a global audience, with live coverage and updates available online. The tournament promises to be an exciting event, with top scrabble players battling it out for the coveted EEAST title and a share of the prize money.
