The National Sports Commission (NSC) has taken a significant step towards enhancing women’s participation in sports governance by formally recognizing the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN) as a stakeholder in the governance structure of National Sports Federations (NSF).

This move aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) agenda and reflects Nigeria’s commitment to promoting gender inclusiveness in sports administration.

The NSC’s recognition of AFFAN is a testament to the Commission’s commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and sustainable growth in Nigerian sports.

The NSC has approved AFFAN’s representation on the boards of national sports federations in the forthcoming elections.
This inclusion will tap into the wealth of knowledge, discipline, and inspiration of Nigeria’s former female athletes, who will help guide policies, mentor the next generation, and ensure their legacy continues in the boardroom.

The NSC’s leadership structure already reflects a commitment to gender inclusion, with three core departments led by outstanding women: Mrs. Mbora (Federations and Elite Athletes), Mrs. Amaka Ashiofu (Grassroots), Mrs. Thecla Opara (Festivals & Para Sports).

The inclusion of AFFAN will strengthen governance, inspire young athletes, and sustain the legacy of excellence in Nigerian sports.

It recognizes the invaluable contributions and experiences of former female athletes who have proudly represented Nigeria on national and international stages.
