The Nigeria Wrestling Federation is celebrating a remarkable achievement at the Senior World Championships in Zagreb, where Esther Kolawale, just 22 years old, battled her way to the bronze medal match in the 62kg class.

Although she narrowly lost 5-6 to Mongolia’s Purevdorj, Kolawale’s determination and skill earned her a 5th place finish in the world, a testament to Nigeria’s growing prowess in wrestling.

Despite the impressive performance, the Nigerian wrestling team faced a significant setback when five of their seven athletes were denied Schengen visas, citing lack of “sufficient financial means” or concerns about returning home. This injustice not only affected Nigeria but also other African nations, including Tunisia, Cameroon, and Congo, denying them a level playing field on the world stage.

Hon Baraladei Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and UWW Bureau Member, praised Kolawale’s achievement, saying, “Esther’s performance is a beacon of what lies ahead. At just 22, she has shown the heart of a champion and the promise of an Olympic future.”

Igali also congratulated Kolawale on her outstanding 5th place finish, adding, “Nigeria is proud of you!”

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation celebrates the courage and pride of its wrestlers, including Esther Kolawale and Jumoke Adekoye, who carry the nation’s hope with determination and skill. Despite the challenges faced, Nigerian wrestling has shown that it can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world.
