The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The petition fell short of the required signatures, garnering only 208,132 signatures, which translates to 43.86% of registered voters.

According to INEC in a statement e-signed by Sam Olumekun, Chairman Information and Voters Education Committee, the petition required signatures from more than half of the 474,554 registered voters in the constituency, which amounts to at least 237,278 voters. The 29,146 signature shortfall led to the petition’s rejection.

The Commission assured that it handled the matter fairly and in accordance with the law. INEC notified the senator, the presiding officer of the Senate, and published the notice on its website.

The Commission also informed Nigerians that it would verify the signatures to ensure compliance with the law.

The petition’s rejection means no further action will be taken regarding the recall. INEC has issued a public notice to this effect, available on its website and social media platforms.
