Leopold Konig is set to lead BORA – hansgrohe in next year’s Tour de France after re-joining the team on a two-year deal.

Currently known as BORA – ARGON 18 ahead of a title sponsor change that takes effect in 2017, the German outfit are seeking to earn a World Tour licence and had already announced the high-profile captures of Peter Sagan and Rafal Majka.

Konig, who has recorded top-10 finishes in all three Grand Tours, expressed excitement at his return.

“It was [head sport director] Enrico Poitschke and [team manager] Ralph Denk who picked me up from a small continental team and gave me the chance to race the biggest races in the world and to progress as a rider,” said the Czech.

“So when I heard about their new project and ambitions I felt like coming back home where it all started. I’ve learned a lot [in] the last two years with Team Sky and I’m extremely grateful for this experience. Now I’m ready to give my best in the coming years and chase our ambitious goals.”

Denk added: “I am very happy that Leo is coming back to our team. I feel honoured. Even though 2016 was not his best season, he is still one of a few riders that has the potential to finish a Grand Tour on the podium.”
