The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has highlighted a wave of landmark achievements and strategic milestones currently shaping a new era for Nigerian sports. Speaking recently via updates shared on the Family United By Sports (FUBS) group on the widely used messaging platform WhatsApp, the DG outlined significant progress recorded across various sporting disciplines and administrative frame works.

Key Highlights:

According to Olopade, Nigeria’s rising sporting profile continues to gain global traction, as the nation—powered by emerging school talents and IJA athletes—has secured qualification for the World Athletics Championships Beijing 2027. This achievement underscores the collaborative efforts of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the NSC in strengthening grassroots-to-elite pathways.

On the continental stage, Nigeria’s wrestling team has reaffirmed its dominance across Africa, while the national U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, recorded an impressive victory over Malawi—further reinforcing Nigeria’s football pedigree.

– In a significant boost to sports development, the Esports sector has secured a major partnership with Adidas, signalling growing investor confidence in emerging sporting industries. Similarly, First Bank of Nigeria has committed to a multi-billion naira sponsorship of the prestigious Principal’s Cup, while Puma is set to support Team Nigeria at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games through a multi-million naira partnership.

Notably, PremiumTrust Bank has delivered what is being described as one of the largest sponsorship investments in Nigerian sports history—setting a new benchmark across all sporting codes.

Beyond sponsorships, Nigeria’s professional boxing scene is witnessing renewed international relevance, with global meets being attracted through strategic collaboration between the NSC and key stakeholders.

– In cycling, preparations are underway for Nigeria to host the African continent in Abuja, further positioning the country as a hub for major sporting events.

Infrastructure development remains a central pillar of the Commission’s agenda. The Warri Township Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium are nearing completion, while both the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and National Stadium Lagos are set to undergo full-scale rehabilitation, with procurement processes already in advanced stages.

These achievements reflect the unwavering commitment of the current administration, with strong support from Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the coordinated leadership of NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, the DG Bukola Olopade and their team.

“The message is clear: Nigerian sports is on a decisive upward movement—Driven by vision, investment, and execution,” Olopade asserted.
“Eyes on the ball from Shehu and Bukola and their team across all sports.”
“We move,” Olopade assures.
