Veteran sprinter Chidi Okezie produced a clutch performance on Sunday to anchor Nigeria’s 4x400m mixed relay team to a World Championships qualifying spot at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone.
Facing a stacked field, the Nigerian quartet showed tactical discipline and grit to grab one of the qualifying slots for the global championships. Okezie’s composure and powerful closing leg proved decisive in sealing the ticket.
“It wasn’t an easy race, but we came in with a clear goal, to qualify for the World Championships and we gave everything to make it happen,” Okezie said after the race.
Racing before a lively crowd, Nigeria overcame early pressure and timed their surge perfectly down the stretch. Okezie, the most experienced member of the squad, steadied the team at a critical moment.
“We trusted each other and stuck to the plan. In relays, it’s not just about individual strength but how well you come together as a team,” he said. “I’m proud of what we achieved here, and this is just the beginning.”
The result reaffirms Nigeria’s pedigree in relay events and provides a confidence boost heading into the World Championships. The focus now shifts to fine-tuning ahead of the global stage.
“We know there’s still work to be done, but this performance shows we are on the right track. By the time we get to the World Championships, we’ll be ready to compete with the best,” Okezie added.
Sunday’s run not only booked Nigeria’s ticket but also highlighted the country’s growing depth in the mixed relay, with Okezie once again delivering when it mattered most.
